The Lucky Pants Bring Results...   NEW
Sun 24th May 2009.  By Webmaster.

The Ladies B rounded off their long season with a "battle of the hangovers" match against Vikings B on Saturday. With several players from each side hammering the bar at the MHA dinner on the previous evening, there was a mist of vino steaming up from all corners of the pitch! It's a tough call to say which team was suffering the most but Lisa Kelly & Tracey Mooney were certainly competing well with Dani Kelly & Bex Harding from Vikings!

It was Vikings who struck first in the match, they took a 1-0 lead after converting a short corner. However, Valkyrs got into their stride soon after and a few of the younger players hadn't made it to the dinner started causing untold trouble for the Vikings defence. Leading the way with some awesome hockey were the duo of Amy Speed and Leanne Prescott. They had a storming match in midfield and linked up well with Michelle "Lucky Pants" Clague and Tamsyn Cleaveley. Amy's pace was decisive and with some rapdily developing skill on the ball, she scared the living daylights out of everyone who tried to get in her way.

Besides Amy & Leanne, the other candidate for player of the match was Kate "Queen of the 15 minute power nap" Reynolds. With only 10 players, she found herself playing at left back but took it all in her stride to put in a star performance. Solid in the tackle all game, she also used that mach 3 strike to good effect but sadly couldn't get her shooting radar tuned-in to find the net.

The match finished up 4-1 and left the Ladies B second in their division, which is a fantastic result. Tracey Mooney has done a tremendous job this season but has decided to relinquish her role as captain and has passed over the captains armband to dancing queen Michelle Clague. Good luck with the new job next season!

Allan Cottier   NEW
Fri 22nd May 2009.  By Kit Gawne.

Allan Cottier, aged 64, died this week. He had been gravely ill since the end of last year, and, although his time was limited, his sudden death still came as a shock.

Allan was a long term player, committee member and president of Valkyrs Hockey Club. He began playing for Valkyrs in 1965 and was still taking part in competitive hockey up until a couple of years ago for Castletown. He got quite a kick out of still playing in his early 60s. Allan was mainly a centre forward for Valkyrs Vagabonds mixed and Valkyrs men's teams. Both teams won many leagues and cups in the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s. Allan was a free-scoring forward with a unique style of his own which not only confused the opposition but often his fellow team members as well!

He won the Manx Hockey Association's leading goal scorer award in 1968-69, 1969-70 and 1973-74. He played for the Island side on many occasions. At this time he also involved himself in the running of the sport through his membership of the committee of the Manx Hockey Association, and his interest in helping local hockey was demonstrated by his contribution to the running of the Easter and Whit festivals. He became president of Valkyrs in 1977, a position he held for many years.

Allan's love of hockey and the pride he had of being part of Valkyrs hockey club was matched by the affection and respect his fellow players had for him. The Island's hockey fraternity mourns the early loss of a true servant to the sport and a great character who was rarely seen without a smile on his face. A man of great honesty and integrity. He leaves a wife Susan and sons Steve and Nick, both of whom also play hockey.

Ladies C Show True Potential
Tue 24th Mar 2009.  By Webmaster.

It's been a difficult season so far for Donna Harrisons' ladies but it all came together nicely on Saturday as they overcame a tough Vikings side 1-0. It was a real team effort with Jules Faragher and Shauna Kennaugh rock solid in defence and both Sian Murphy and Tamsyn Cleaveley putting in a good shift. Lyndsey Clark managed to grab the only goal after some great skills by Katie Craster who supplied a sublime assist. However, the lady of the match was without doubt Maddy Turner who worked so hard she could hardly stand up at the end of the game!! Well done to you all, your Captain is very proud of you!!

Newsflash...The Men Have Recovered Their Mojo!
Sun 8th Mar 2009.  By Webmaster.

After a strange start to the season, with a serious lack of goalscoring, the Mens A were back on form on Saturday with an impressive 4-1 win over Vikings A. The ski team were back from their life changing experience in St Anton and reinforced the ranks. Greg returned to his new semi-defensive role bringing in a lot of gluteus maximus; Cherry, aka Captain Slow, helped the team by getting the enemy absolutely trashed and taking advantage of their weakness and Chris Caldwell charmed the pants off the Vikings defence by 'pretending' to be a little bit camp and running an excellent stealth mission!

The majority of the goalscoring was influenced by Greg "Do I really look like a camel" Miller who manufactured two of the Valkyrs goals. He chucked a 'jonny flight pattern' on to the end of Neill Jacobs' stick and also provided the ammunition for Russell Miller's goal. To get in the act himself, he fired in a drag flick which was described by one observer as being as ferocious as watching a space shuttle loaded with napalm being fired into the depths of hell and exploding.

Elsewhere, the Mens B finished their match with Bacchas B with frustration and just a point after a 0-0 draw. The game was close throughout and the blues had the best of the chances with Tim "The Mountain Yeti" Groves hitting the post three times. Strike partner Hull also went close to breaking the dead-lock and had a straight strike from a short corner miraculously cleared off the line. At the back, Dave Hall had a solid game as did James Seed in goal. They were supported well by Steven Lowe who made some outstanding runs into the opposition half, creating a lot of trouble in the process. Despite this, the team couldn't find the net and went back to Team HQ with their first point of the season.

The Ladies C recorded their first win of the season last week after a close game with Saracens. The Valkyrs Ladies went 1-0 up through a first club goal for Katie Watson and after Saracens levelled, dancing queen Flanagan made it 2-1. Saracens retaliated with another goal so at 2-2, it was down to Sian "never get in my way when a pint of Carling is at stake" Murphy to fire home the winner. Other notable performances came from Karen in goal and Shauna Kennaugh playing at the back, who, by all accounts, chased the ball down like J-Lo on speed! Well done to all the girls and hopefully more points can be claimed during the last few weeks of their season.

Ladies A Are Still On Fire!
Sun 15th Feb 2009.  By Webmaster.

In the old days of Christopher Colombus and even before then, the discovery of L'Anse aux Meadows, there was a force to be reckoned with. No, it's not our compatriots from Vikings, primarily Zoe Carney, with those outrageous skills or Conor Byrne, with that outrageous pink, feminine head-band. It comes in the form of El Capitan, Leanne Brew. She has inspired not only just a few young players in her squad but possibly the entire Valkyrian population of wannabe hockey players.

Brewers Ladies took a spartan attack to the 'red of the south' and came back to the western shores with two points in the bag. The two goals that made the difference came from unlikley contributors, Lorna "I love biscuits & I am the puppy mistress" Kennaugh and Leanne "I love watching Greg buy me a valentines present" Brew. The serious contenders for woman of the match were plentiful but it would be unfair to single out anyone in particular...although Vanessa Roberts played most of the match with "I eat the opposition for breakfast" on the back of her match shirt.

Ladies A Are On Fire!
Sun 8th Feb 2009.  By Webmaster.

Brewer's ladies faced a tough game against Bacchas A on Saturday and luckily the whole team arrived at the pitch on time. That was despite the best efforts of Aalish Bennett who inexplicably got a little lost on the way to the NSC and did a spot of sightseeing around some of Douglas's more unusual neighbourhoods! However, that didn't shift the focus of the game and the ladies got into their stride early with several dangerous approaches on the Bacchas goal. It wasn't until later in the half when Valkyrs opened the scoring; a nice move from Ashley Hall was neated finished off by goalmachine of the moment, Andrea "DKM" Kneen.

At 1-0, Valkyrs looked a little anxious and Bacchas looked dangerous from their short corners. Valkyrs got straight on to sorting that problem out with another Kneeno goal in the first minute of the second half to make the scoreline a more secure 2-0. During the rest of the half, Bernie Dunn continued to have a stormer at the back where she tamed the Bacchas attack and helped Sarah Pressley keep a clean-sheet. The scoring was rounded off with another Kneeno goal and a nice deflection from Poppy Walker.

All of the ladies had a superb game and Valkyrs player of the day was awarded to Bernie. The voting was a close affair with Vanessa Roberts and Aalish Bennett also in the running after both displaying some fantastic talent.

Mens A Survive Brutal Derby.....
Sun 1st Feb 2009.  By Webmaster.

It was a derby match not for the faint hearted as the Mens A beat the B team 6-1 at QE2 on Saturday. Will Margot's men were looking to put on a performance after a poor display the week before but at times looked on edge and low on confidence. The B team's all action style made it difficult for the A team to get into any sort of rhythm but the deadlock was finally broken after the B team were a man down due to a serious head injury to Dave Hall. In fact, the B team played the majority of the first half with ten men due to some committed tackling from Messrs Moyer, Ferns and Hull, none of which was helped by the theatrical antics of Chris Caldwell. According to umpire A J Miller it could have been the strong wind that was making some people lose their balance (you know who you are..)! Goal of the game came from the birthday boy legend Gregory Miller, however this brilliance was overshadowed by being rinsed a number of times by potential Island player Jonah Hull and over the hill veteran Vic Ferns!

Only Two Matches Survive
Sat 17th Jan 2009.  By Webmaster.

The shocking weather took several teams Prisoner of War on Saturday and it was just the Mens A and Mens B teams which took to the park. Will Margot's squad took on Vikings B and with several players missing, coasted to a 4-0 win. Vikings put on a spirited display but were outplayed for several periods and Valkyrs could have increased the margin of victory. Chris Thomas, back playing hockey full time started the season well with a hat-trick and the fourth was slotted home by Jon Norrington.

Meanwhile, the B team faced a tough opener against Ramsey A. The squad also had a couple of players missing but a reinforcement was found in the shape of old school warrior, Neil Shimmin! The first half was a fairly close affair with some decent hockey from both sides. Ramsey had slightly more of the play and took their first goal from the penalty spot after a shot was saved on the line by a defenders foot. Ramsey seized on an opening early in the second half to double their lead, a defensive mix up costing Valkyrs dearly. The remainder of the second half saw some better hockey from Valkyrs with Rossy and Steven Lowe both having excellent games in the middle of the park. They were ably assisted from defence by club stalwarts, Dave Griffiths and side-kick, Clive Callister. The team will take heart from a decent first match and will hopefully continue to improve over the season.

Mixed B Team Gain Promotion To Premier Division
Sat 10th Jan 2009.  By Webmaster.

A cold and windy day greeted the blues at the Queen Elizabeth II Coloseum on Saturday but spirits were high and the team were keen to sign off the season with a win to put the team into the Premier division. With Captain Ferns operating in international waters this week, Hull took charge and started the game umpiring after Enty thought the match started at that well known slot of 11.30am!

The first half was close although Valkyrs could have taken the lead through Samuel Quinn and Mark "I am an inspiration to so many" Moyer but both squandered chances that even a schoolboy could have converted. The half finished 0-0 and after a five minute brainstorm, Valkyrs had the gameplan sorted and set off with gusto. The lead was taken soon into the second half with Hull finishing an excellent move down the left flank. Rob "Cherry Picker" Mylchreest was also on hand to make it 2-0 by finishing a fine move down the right hand side of the pitch from Aalish Bennett, Kirk Michaels version of Marie Antoinette.

The game was played with a great spirit and the team were wished well in their pursuit of Premier Division glory by Phoenix, which included Valkyrs Mens regulars Jon Norrington and Mike Flowers.

Kit Gawne (Life Member) Has Something To Say......!
Thur 8th Jan 2009.  By Webmaster.

Just a brief note of congratulations to all Valkyrs mixed teams for their efforts this season, especially the A and B teams for winning their respective divisions.

Over Christmas and New Year I have been out with some of the old guard – Ken Teare, Martin Callister, Fred Kissack, Caroline Convery and of course, June Gawne – who have all asked me to pass on their good wishes as well. I am going to see Allan Cottier – one time president and chairman – this afternoon who is recovering from a brain tumour operation. We will, no doubt, crow over the Club’s recent results and remember when we were top dogs as well!!

Good to see that the Styx trophy is still played for – many happy memories of the Boxing Day games and après hockey jinks. Hope to get along to see a couple of men’s and ladies games this next part of the season and will seek out you and others who might remember some of us.

In the meantime keep up the good work and please pass on our congratulations to all.

A Team Take Premier Division Title...
Sun 4th Jan 2009.  By Webmaster.

Chris Caldwell's A Team are the Mixed Premier league champions, but it was a very close encounter. Bacchas A needed to beat Vikings A in the final league game of the season and were 2-1 up at the break. However, Vikings started the second half in style with honorary club member Conor Byrne taking the role of "Jon the Bomb" to seal a Vikings win and a Valkyrs title. Captain Caldwell was overcome with joy at the end and lost for words when interviewed by Manx Radio, you've either got it or you haven't... It was a very difficult campaign, at times with blood sweat and tears shed (literally in the case of Mark Moyer) but well done to everyone who played their part at some point during the season. With the B team also winning their league it was a very nice double..

Casualty Taken On Foreign Operation!
Thu 25th Dec 2008.  By Webmaster.

It's been reported that the Club took another casualty yesterday in the form of Rear Gunner Gregory Miller. The wires were buzzing with conflicting information that our comrade took direct incoming sniper fire in the back and ended up on one ski with no cover at all. In his stricken moment of pain, desparately trying to get help, he somehow managed to mutter the words "Will you marry me...?" to which GI Brew replied "Yes" before she administered the emergency morphine...!

Congratulations to you both from all at the Club. The Webmaster has only two words to say: STAG PARTY!

The Special One....
Sat 20th Dec 2008.  By Webmaster.

At a time, long ago, when werewolves roamed free and the world rotated in the opposite direction (because of heavier polar bears back then), there was something special being created by the hands of god himself. This creation is so inspiring that even Ian "Silver Fox" Miller, the club's authority on such complexities, has trouble understanding it. Yes, I am referring to the phenomenon sweeping the nation that is Aalish Bennett, the same Bennett that has officially swapped her middle name from 'Elise' to 'Le God'. Despite not actually playing for the A team on Saturday, her presence at the side of the pitch was so extreme that gravity almost inverted. The team were clearly demonstrating Bennett's universally outrageous skills and she helped them come to a 5-2 victory by massaging almond oil into Chris Caldwell's armpits at half time. It is now looking so natural when Bennett hovers around the A team camp that when she's not there, it's almost as upsetting as seeing Hans Solo without Chewbacca.

With a few regulars away, the team also called in some heavy duty reinforcements in the shape of Vanessa Roberts, Poppy Walker and the possibly the hairiest man in Manx hockey, Vic Ferns. All three contributed well, especially Miss Walker who took down a beautiful Vic Ferns flight-pattern (that'll be an aerial ball) with Bennett-like precision and beat the keeper with an ingenious touch. So special that even a spectator was heard saying that he couldn't love a human baby as much as he'd loved that goal.

The A team are now awaiting the final match of the season between Vikings and Bacchas to determine who will win the league. A slip up from Bacchas will render Valkyrs stinking of gold but that means Vikings must dig deep into their talent locker and bring out a fully loaded goal-bazooka.

Groves Scores In Every Game...
Mon 15th Dec 2008.  By Webmaster.

Tim Groves continued his run of scoring in every game as he led his side to a 4-2 victory over Bacchas C to claim fourth spot in Division One. As ever, Neil Patterson Shimmin gave 110% and was rewarded with a goal as did Dave Hall who also managed to find the back of the net for the fifth consecutive game. However all of the above was overshadowed by a wonder goal from Charlie Griffiths who beat five people before slotting home like the Louisville Slugger before ripping of his shirt to flex his guns in celebration (well almost..!). Congratulations to Giggsy who made a stunning debut for the Club showing some sublime one handed skills for all of ten minutes before being substituted by Captain Groves due to a total lack of fitness and oxygen in his lungs. He will apparently be as fit as a butchers dog by the time the Mens season starts..!

It's Still All About Bennett.....
Sun 7th Dec 2008.  By Webmaster.

It was once said that the Aztecs and Romans were pioneers of their time and shaped the way in which the world now exists. From the first century, Septimius Severus, Roman General and Emporer led impressive stats during his upbringing at Leptis Magna and after the murder of Pertinax, went on to run the show in Rome. Fitting some might say, and that brings me on to an important point. As with last weeks display, Aalish Bennett has yet again run the show at Valkyrs very own colosseum at the QEII and put on a display that the left the opposition looking like they'd got in front of NATO sanctioned tomahawk missile test firing exercise. The genius of Bennett's approach play was sublime and it was evident that she has clearly been taking tips from the club's grand ayatollah, Mark "I am a striker" Moyer. The season has now finished and as one would expect, the first division title has been claimed with conviction. As a mark of respect, I would like a change to the usual engraving with the club's name changing to read: "Division 1 Champions 2008 - Aalish Bennett...she's so good she decides when the sun shines".

It's All About Bennett.....
Sat 29th Nov 2008.  By Webmaster.

Only one person had a serious contribution to make on Saturday. You could think of the candidates being Hull, Quinn, Vincent or part time assassin Mark Moyer. You could even name playmakers such as Leonard Victor Ferns or Robert "I am the Cherry" Mylchreest. However, the real deal in the world of pro hockey was Aalish Bennett....also known as Le God! Not only did she completely run the show on the right hand side of midfield, she made several spurts into the forward line and caused untold trouble for the Saracens defence. Some might say that she caused an upset on a level reminisicent of Pearl Harbour but I think something more along the lines of storming the caves of Tora Bora by SAS operatives to be more accurate and precise.

As well as chucking in a goal herself, "Sir Moyer of the Glen Vine Stockbroker Belt" fired in three goals, joined by the current club top scorer Mr Hull with two goals. Ferns, Mylchreest, Watt and Lowe also had numerous chances to get themselves on the scoresheet but opted to fire everything wide in a show of solidarity to our comrades from Saracens who didn't field a full team. One more game is all that prevents the Dream Team from celebrating winning the league title and it will be one mighty party to commiserate Moyer on coming second in the topscorer league....despite all the complaining he does about hurting his fingernail or whatever it was that caused him to wear a silly red cast for six weeks.

Meanwhile, the Colts continued their fine season with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Cosney. They were 2-0 up and half time thanks to a short corner strike from Oli Lockley and some good goal poaching from Liam Dunn who manged to bundle the ball over the line after another short corner strike from Oli. Karren Reid had another fine game in goal making a number of good saves under the watchful eye of her goal keeping mentor Daz Quirk. One of her saves was particularly impressive being low down in the corner which required lightening fast reactions. Oli Lockley managed to add another goal before the side were awarded a penalty flick. After a round of "paper, scissors, rock" Cal Green stepped up to calmly slot the ball passed the keeper and almost break the net!! This side just keeps getting better with each game...

A & C Teams Pipped At The Post
Tue 25th Nov 2008.  By Webmaster.

After a tense week of negotiations, the A team were forced to play their cup game against Falcons with no less than 7 first team ladies unavailable. However, fine reinforcements were called in going by the names of Reynolds, Cassidy and Goltz! For the first 50 minutes, the game was in dead-lock with neither side finding the "holed" net although Valkyrs continued to battle hard and had some good chances to open the scoring. It was Vikings who found the "unholed" net first with a low shot past Keeper Margot. Undeterred, Valkyrs had the majority of the play late in the second half but couldn't quite edge home a goal with an out-of-form Morris having all sorts of trouble with his shooting radar. B team goal machine, Kate Reynolds, had a superb game on the right of midfield and was on hand to watch young Chazz Michael Griffiths slot home a wonderful finish into the "holed" net only to have the goal overruled and leave Valkyrs scoreless and dumped out of the Cup.

Following on from the A team's near miss, the C team took on Saxons in what promised to be a close game. The game lived up to expectations and was superbly officiated by Ian "Silver Fox" Miller who found that blowing into his whistle and looking at his stopwatch is the right way round! The goals soon started hitting the net at both ends with Tim Groves opening the scoring for Valkyrs after a fantastic run from Amy Speed. The other Valkyrs ladies were also in the thick of the action with Ashley Hall causing trouble in the middle and Lisa Kelly patrolling the defence like an F16 fighter jet on full throttle! Throughout the second half, both teams could have edged it but it came down to some good finishing from the Saxons attackers who wrapped the game up 5-4 in the last few minutes.

B Team Close In On Title.....
Sun 16th Nov 2008.  By Webmaster.

Despite missing a few regulars, the B team brushed aside Saxons with a comfortable 3-0 victory at the NSC to stay top of the league and on course for the 1st division title. Nick Watt suffered a bad injury when he caught a stick in the eye and had to have 18 stiches to sew it back up again. It was just as well he was wearing his new contact lenses for the first time or it have could have been much worse. The game continued and not for the first time this season James Seed put on a great display in goal making numerous important saves. Maddy Turner had a good game in defence as did Kate Reynolds who managed to get on the end of a cross to deflect the ball into the net for her second goal of the season. Jonah Hull was not at his best but still managed to bag a goal. Perhaps the shadow of a returning Mark Moyer and the mind games he's been playing are finally starting to get to the fragile Hull...?

The A team were less than two minutes away from completing a double over Bacchas A and almost certainly clinching the Premier division title when they were pegged back to 3-3 in a pulsating match at QE2. After being behind twice they showed great character to level the game through Andrea Kneen and the Captain himself Chris Caldwell. Gareth Morris put himself about as usual and took a stiff strike into his wedding tackle much to the horror of his watching girlfriend Penny but luckily for her the "goods" were not damaged too much! Greg Miller also put on a good display with some penetrating runs into the opposition danger zone but at the end of the game it was a case of what may have been.

D Team Beat Kestrels On Flicks.....
Mon 10th Nov 2008.  By Webmaster.

There were quite a few regulars missing and so Captain Harrison had to pull in reinforcements, namely Captain Groves, Neil Shimmin and Toff Cain which proved to be a brilliant combination. There was also the added bonus of not knowing that Rossy was going to show up so all in all a pretty fantastic line up. Unfortunately they went conceded two goals within the first 15 minutes as Vinny was running late but we got the game under control once she arrived with Jules Faragher at the back who as always was rock solid and didn't let anyone past her. The whole team played brilliantly, could name everyone - special mentions must go to Andy Kneale who scored his best goal ever and nearly put a hole in the back of the goal - there was some determination behind it! Rossy's blue flowery shorts need a mention too :o) Ozzy was a dynamo in midfield and Christian Corlett showed off her superb keeper skills - particularly on the flicks when we won 3-1. Also, thanks to Moorey who couldn't play as he was tied to the C team but gave brilliant support and encouragement from the sideline for the entire game. Bring on the semi-final where if we can get the same team out we'll give anyone a run for their money.

Mhelliah.....
Sun 9th Nov 2008.  By Webmaster.

The club held their annual mhelliah at the Creek Inn on Saturday and a staggering £1,250 was raised. Great appreciation goes to all those who made the effort to turn up and bring along some fantastic items to be auctioned off. A special mention must go to Donna, Tim & Greg who between them "acquired" several high value donations from local businesses. A big thank you also goes to Russ Miller who was MC for the evening....he did a fantastic job and even managed to get himself "tipsy" despite having a mic attached to his face for most of the night!

Some of the highlights of the night were captured on camera and can be viewed in the gallery.

Colts Stand Up to Northern Intimidation...
Sun 2nd Nov 2008.  By Webmaster.

The Colts continued their fine form with two strikes from the talented Aalish Burden to earn a well deserved 2-1 victory over the Robins. Oli Lockley, Liam Dunn, Chris Killey, Katie Caster and Rob Condra all had impressive games as did Katie Watson, Anya Jackson and Karen Read in defence. It was slightly disappointing that two senior Ramsey men (you know who you are) decided to be a little bit shall we say immature but our kids stood up to the intimidation well and had the last laugh. Captain Simon Kelly was full of praise for his young developing side and they continue to do the Club proud. Well done everyone!

The B versus C derby clash was a very close affair with the B team just edging it 5-3 in what was a very close encounter. The C team started brightly but it was the B team that took an early lead although they were not playing their best hockey of the season. Star player for the B's was James Seed who made a number of outstanding saves to keep his side in the game. For the C team there were many good performances but Chloe Lace, Craig Killey, Neil Shimmin and Ashley Hall stood out. Tim Groves notched a brace as did Vic Ferns and Jonah Hull who had in previous games been crumbling under the shadow of a returning Mark Moyer but managed to stretch his lead over him to four goals. The Webmaster thinks that a goals per game ratio would be a much fairer measure of striking greatness but we shall see...!

Vincent SOS...
Sun 12th Oct 2008.  By Webmaster.

With at least 17 regular players missing from the Club this week, it was all hands to the pump in a herculean effort to put out five competitive teams. To prove the point, Nicky Vincent straight from the old skool of hockey stepped up to the plate and helped the B team overcome title contenders Saxons 3-1 in an pulsating match at Peel. Lisa Kelly also answered the call and put on a fine show in a makeshift defence with Dave Griffiths and the impressive Adene Bennett in goal. Up front, Chris Thomas playing his first game of the season ran hard all day as did Aalish Bennett who managed to grab a first goal of the season. Vic Ferns & Jonah Hull also helped the cause with a goal each to make the game safe.

Meanwhile, the Webmaster would like to distance himself from the next match report submitted by an excited Captain Caldwell of the A Team. Here goes...

Having being thumped 8-2 in the previous contest by Vikings, it was not only a battle that could determine the resting place of the division but also of pride. Greg Miller once again performed well in the hole and set a new record of J-lo'ing 5 + people on the day. This was topped by a peach of a goal that can only be described as half as good as Chris Caldwell’s. Miller was denied Man of the Match by an outstanding performance from Rodders, who without his Swedish friend this weekend rest his fury elsewhere; unfortunately for Vikings it was all over the chippy!! Individual merit should also be given to Will Margot for not letting in 8 goals again! Keeping a clean sheet was also down to strong defensive displays from Jenny Walmsley, Kristy Bowley, Bernie Dunn and Charlie Griffiths (aka the Great Wall of China). In all a superb team performance! Special thanks should go to Gareth Morris for not going to his Cricket coaching…..we love you!

Caldwell & Jacobs Destroy The Phoenix...
Sun 12th Oct 2008.  By Webmaster.

It doesn't happen that often (but it's great when it does) as the Club was unbeaten in all matches this weekend. Leading from the front were the A team who made sure that the Phoenix would certainly not be rising from the flames by sticking fourteen past them! Although it was a good all around team performance it was Captain Caldwell and his lovechild lookalike Neill Jacobs who stole the limelight with four goals each on the day. Not to be outdone, Leanne Brew chipped in with a brace and one of the strangest goal celebrations you've ever heard (obviously doesn't score that often!).

The B Team put on a fine display to outclass title contenders Celts 6-3. The team were fast out of the blocks and it was Kate Stockman who opened the scoring by latching on to back post ball to get the faintest of deflections into the net. Man of the match Steve Lowe was exceptional all day and whilst scoring two could easily have had another couple if he had been more selfish! Rob Mylchreest had obviously talked up his abilities to his Swedish "lady friend" who was so impressed that she came over to see for herself what stamina and ability is all about (and not just the hockey..!!) Lorna Kennaugh also had a good game but for some reason kept falling over her own feet!

C Team Stun The Saxons...
Sun 5th Oct 2008.  By Webmaster.

On a horrid day for hockey and with both the D team & Colts having their games abandoned it was the C team who stole the show with a superb performance to beat title contenders Saxons 4-3. It all seemed too easy after going two goals up with Clive Callister and Ashley Hall playing out of their skins but they were soon pegged back and were 3-2 down with not much time left to play. However, a combination of Captain Groves with a brace (but should have been more but for some school boy finishing), Ashley Hall and the ever willing Nick Watt with a goal each made it a memorable victory over (on paper anyway) a much stronger side. Congratulations to the whole squad for a great display.

The B Team without four regular players were still far too strong for a spirited Saracens side and ran out 5-3 victors. For the first twenty minutes Marksman Hull looked a bit lost without his usual strike buddy Mark Moyer but soon adjusted with the help of Sam Quinn and between the two of them they managed four of the five goals on the day. Steve Lowe playing up for the first time this season also had a good game and managed to get on the score sheet. Helen Bates in defence and Aalish Bennett down the left worked hard all day as did Kate Reynolds who delivered some fine crosses from out wide on the right flank. A good win that keeps the side in title contention with a top of the table clash next week against Celts to look forward to.

Finally, Mark Moyer couldn't put the brakes on quick enough and had a bad collision with the outer fence at RGS. He suffered a deep cut to the head and a broken wrist/radius which he may need surgery on to correct. This will more than likely keep him out of action for some time. From everyone at the Club, get well soon Ace.

Cup Joy For The B Team
Mon 29th Sep 2008.  By Webmaster.

With no less than 7 players missing from the squad on Saturday, the B team faced a tough match with Saxons in the 1st round of the HA Cup. Skipper Ferns took the set-back in his stride however, as he knew that Rob "Yes, I am still nicknamed Cherry" Mylchreest was still around to dominate the match with a ferocious and relentless hunger. He duly lived up to the hype and spent much of the game making some darting spurts from midfield creating untold trouble for the Saxon's defence. Despite going a goal down, Valkyrs soon got their game back on track with two goals from resident marksman Hull, both put on a plate for him after some old school hockey from Clive "I live to party in Ibiza" Callister. It was late on in the 1st half when co-resident marksman Moyer pulled out his Rocket Propelled Grenade launcher and dispatched a truly frightening strike which almost created a sonic boom as it crossed the line.

Both sides continued playing some great hockey in the 2nd half but neither side could find another goal. The Valkyrs defence of Dave, Naomi, Emma with Seedy in goal had a fantastic game and were ably supported by arguably the player of the day for Valkyrs, Maddy Turner. She came up from one of our lower teams and put on an exceptional performance which no doubt helped the side win the game.

A special mention must also go to Lorna Kennaugh who ensured the team weren't short and played the whole match on the wrong side of the pain barrier. A tremendously painful neck and back didn't stop her for a minute and she got through the full 70, possibly as a result of being high on a cocktail of prescription medicines.

C Team Put On A Brave Show...
Sun 21st Sep 2008.  By Webmaster.

The C team without Captain Groves and Callister put on a fine performance against the B team on Saturday but ran out of steam towards the end of the game to finish losing to the senior side 8-0. Nick Watt, Steve Lowe, Oli Lockley and Liam Dunn all played out of their skin as did Ashley Hall up front. They started off much sharper than the opposition but eventually the B team settled down and started to move the ball around well. New keeper Adene Bennett had a good debut and there was even a first ever goal in Manx hockey for Kate Reynolds. Poppy Walker again created havoc down the right wing but it was the Chuckle Brothers (Messrs Moyer & Hull....to you, to me, to you, to me) who shared the majority of goals between themselves with Vic Ferns assisting along the way.

Simon Kelly's Colts put on a great display with Aalish Burden grabbing a last minute equaliser against a strong Robins outift. This was after Hannah Scarlett had notched the first goal. Rob Condra was outstanding at the back and there were three members of the team making their first appearances in senior hockey. Also, this was the first time Valkyrs have put out a team of Under 18's in a senior league match and they did the Club proud. Well done everyone involved!

Ranny Caldwell's A team came back from the beating of a lifetime at the hands of Vikings last week to secure a solid 4-1 victory over Bacchas A. After a tough start to the match and going 1-0 down, the team got themselves together and replied with goals either side of half-time. Regular scoring sensation, Senor Morris, was on hand to fire in two goals with Gerry Quinn and El Capitan contributing with one each. Greg Miller had a tremendous game in an unfamiliar sweeper role but kept the Valkyrs ship sturdy in rough seas.

Moyer Defies the Years...
Sun 14th Sep 2008.  By Webmaster.

After being a rock in defence for more years than the Webmaster would care to mention, Mark Moyer seems to be relishing the opportunity to show us all what we've been missing out on all these years with another fine display up front. Together with strike partner Jonah Hull they caused problems all day for the Bacchas C defence and ensured that the B team got their season back on track with a fine 5-2 win. In midfield, Sam Quinn was full of energy and enthusiam along with Kate Stockman who had a fine game up the left. Poppy Walker and Lorna Kennaugh worked well togther up and down the right flank and Kerry Beattie was as solid as ever at the back. The C team are up next in the eagerly awaited Club derby this coming Saturday....

The Mixed A had a very tough start to their campaign against a strong Vikings outfit and eventually went down 8-2. Vikings were quickly into their stride and a few goals up in no time and it was always going to be difficult from that point on. Perhaps it was early season nerves but we never really got going and made far too many unforced errors which is something Captain Caldwell will want to address as a matter of urgency for the next game.

The Mixed C got off to a great start by beating Saracens 2-0, a scoreline that should in fact have been more. Captain Groves opened his account with a well taken goal as did the "old fox in the box" Clive Callister who rolled back the years with a vintage display in midfield. The side were very solid at the back with Mr & Mrs Hall both putting in good performances. Added to this, Leanne Prescott & Amy Speed played really well up the flanks so all in all a great result and one which takes them into the derby on Saturday full of confidence.
