About the Club

A Brief History - by Kit Gawne

By the end of the 1950s and the beginning of the 1960s hockey on the Isle of Man had diminished to such an extent that it was in danger of folding up. The Thursday mixed hockey league had been associated with half-day closing of offices, shops and firms, but Saturday was now becoming the principal day off. As a consequence the Saturday mixed league was established in the 1961/62 season. This league consisted of four teams, Cammags, Onchan, Valkyrs and Vikings, all generally made up of current and past Douglas High Schools pupils.

In 1962 Valkyrs Hockey Club became independent of the schools with two mixed teams, Valkyrs A and B. By 1964/65 there were three teams, Vulcans, Vagabonds and Valiants, all playing in the one mixed league. Hockey flourished, and the club soon formed men's and ladies teams. From the late 1960s to the mid 1970s Valkyrs dominated Manx hockey. It then became an upper middle order club with occasional successes, mainly in cup competitions. During the early 1980s Valkyrs became masters of the indoor leagues, dominating them for many years. It was at this time that the club relocated to Peel and again used a high school, Queen Elizabeth II, as a base for development. After many years of success, Valkyrs has again become the premier club on the Island.

The club is still based in Peel and plays home matches at the Queen Elizabeth II High School astro turf pitch.  We have four mixed teams, three mens teams and three ladies teams. We also enter men's, ladies and mixed teams into the indoor leagues and also have Under 11 & Under 13 teams for boys and girls.

Training is held on Wednesday evenings, 6.00pm - 7.30pm for juniors and 7.30pm - 9.00pm for seniors. Any juniors wanting to play hockey should contact our Junior Secretary Craig Killey
