Sun 20th Apr 2008. By Webmaster. Tracey's ladies picked up their first win of the season on Sunday after a close encounter with Phoenix in the cup. With a tough game on the cards, Kate Reynolds stepped up and took control of the midfield with some style. The goal eventually came from Bronwyn Kaneen which gave the girls all they needed to the see the game into a flicks decider. From there, it was easy enough for the girls who now play in the semi-final of the Ladies Cup in May. After clinching the Division 2 title the week before, Jonah Hull's men concluded their league program with a 2-0 win over nearest rivals Harlequins A to end the season the only side in Manx hockey to have a 100% winning record. After a sluggish start, the boys eventually got into their stride in the second half with a contender for strike of the season with a top corner rocket dispatched by Captain Hull. Some good work from Dave Hall and Steve Lowe down the right flank ended up with a short corner that Vic Ferns tucked away with a crisp first time strike. Well done to all the squad who over the course of the season played their part in making this such a fantastic season for all concerned. To celebrate this, Captain Hull has informed the webmaster that the drinks will be on him on 3rd May...! The Ladies A took on Bacchas A on Saturday and were outrageously unlucky to come away losing the match 1-0. For long periods of the game, Valkyrs were the stronger side and produced some excellent hockey, possibly the best so far this season. However, the goals wouldn't come despite the best efforts of Ali Carroon and Ashley Hall who both played some quality hockey. By Webmaster. The B team lads all but sealed the Division 2 title on Saturday by thrashing Castletown B 4-0. Whilst not playing their best hockey of the season they were far too strong for the opposition and came through with goals from Captain Hull, Mark Osborn, Mark Perryman and a first goal for Sam Quinn against his former Club. After his horrific injury the week before and with his good looks having taken a bit of a mauling, Dave Griffiths was back in action to shore up the defence with the Peter Pan of Manx Hockey (Clive Callister) on hand to assist. Up front, Jonny Cain still couldn't find that barn door to hit but as luck would have it he didn't have to!! Elsewhere, the Ladies A continued their rich vein of goalscoring with a 5-1 win over Phoenix. With Captain "GI Jane" Brew back from holiday, the girls quickly opened the scoring after some good work from Andrea Kneen and a cool finish from Poppy Walker. The girls continued to play well and found the net on four more occasions, Steph Lace slotting in two with Ali Carroon and Kayleigh Walker rounding proceedings off nicely with one each. The Ladies C had a strong start to their match against arch rivals Castletown B. They took the lead in the first half after a short corner from Sian Murphy. However, Castletown came back strongly and out-muscled the Valkyrs ladies, replying with three goals. The Mens A withstood a late barrage of hellfire from Bacchas A to secure a point in a strongly contested 0-0 draw. Earlier in the game, Valkyrs had played some good hockey and could have taken the lead a couple of times after some good work by Neill "Koala Bear" Jacobs. However, with 15 minutes to go, Bacchas turned the taps on, desperately seeking a goal but Will Margot kept them at bay with a string of fine saves. By Webmaster. The Ladies A had some fun in the rain to go through to the semi-finals of the Cup by overcoming Bacchas B 6-0. Old school scoring sensation, Miss Kneen, was on-hand to fire in four and she was assisted by Ali Carroon and Steph Lace. Brewer, always keen to slot home a mach 3 herself, was missing from the line-up as she was perfecting her skiing style in France! New signing, Kayleigh Walker, had an impressive first game as did the ever-improving Amy Speed and Leanne Prescott. The Mens B team were understrength and took on a determined Castletown B with just nine players. Half time quickly came with Valkyrs 2-1 up, courtesy of two penalty flicks from Captain Hull. However, domination of the match quickly turned shortly into the second half when Dave "The Rock" Griffiths was forced to leave the game with a nasty head injury; Mark Osborn kindly offered to baby-sit Dave on the way to hospital! With just 7 players on the pitch, Valkyrs struggled but held out for a 3-3 draw. Jonny Cain, who struggled all day to hit a barn door, fired in the third goal from half a yard! Flicks were required to settle the tie and Valkyrs got through their first five on an equal footing to Castletown, sending the flicks competition into sudden death. Craig Killey stepped up to take the penultimate flick and calmly fired into the roof of the net to put the lads into the Cup semi-final. Donna Harrison's Ladies C also took their game to flicks when they faced Saracens in their Plate tie. After a close game, with goals from Sian Murphy and Vicki Stevens, Captain Harrison stepped up to fire in one of the flicks to secure Valkyrs place in the next round of the Plate. Sun 16th Mar 2008. By Webmaster. The Mens B team put ten unanswered goals past Bacchas Cavs on Saturday as Jonah Hull's men kept up their unbeaten record so far this season. After missing a few chances last week, Chris Killey bounced back in fine style managing to grab four goals on the day with Jonah Hull managing a career best of five in one game. The team played some flowing hockey and once again Nick Watt showed a great work rate and committment as did Craig Killey, who free from his normal defensive duties ran free up the right wing with Steve Lowe who managed to set up at least five goals whilst not actually managing to get on the scoresheet himself. By Webmaster. The Ladies C produced a convincing performance to stay to top of Division 2 on Saturday with a 3-0 win over arch rivals, Castletown B. With a dream defence of Jules Faragher, Kaya Teare, Jo Hull and keeper Christian Corlett, the Valkyrs goal was never under much threat. And it wasn't long before the Valkyrs Ladies took the lead through Amy Speed. Another goal from prolific sharp-shooter, Aalish Burden made it two before Speed put another one in to round things off. The forwards were ably assisted by Tamsyn "I had a blinder" Cleaveley & Delta Williams who stepped in at short notice to help out the evergreen Sian Murphy in midfield. This week sees the girls in another top of the table battle with Bacchas C. The blues can take inspiration from returning Valkyrs veteran, Mal Miller, who is flying in from Spain to put on a show to be remembered! Mon 3rd Mar 2008. By Webmaster. Nick Watt carried on his rich vein of form to slam home another goal against Harlequins A. The Mens B team had a tough start to the game but managed to hold it together to go in at half-time at 2-2. Vic Ferns dispatched a penalty flick and a drag flick from a short corner to keep the blues in touch. The second half continued to be fairly tight but a quick couple of goals from Chris Killey & Graham Shimmin settled the nerves. Almost on full-time, Steven Lowe made an impressive run down the right flank and put the ball on Nick Watt's dinner plate for him to finish off in style. The Ladies B also had a close encounter with Ramsey B. The first half was dominated by the Valkyrs ladies and Aalish Bennett fired home a beautiful strike from the top of the circle to give put the team 1-0 up. The second half was a more even affair with neither team finding the goal leaving the final score at 1-0. The next round will be an interesting tie which will hopefully see the Ladies B team winning ways continue. The Mens A team were drawn against the Mens C team in what promised to be an interesting match. On arrival at the pitch, Captain Miller gave his players a chance to pick the playing positions out of a hat. This left Will Margot & Garreth Roome up front - an interesting combination! Despite a strong start, the A team found themselves 1-0 down early on with a goal from Skipper Groves. The A team returned fire with a barrage of hot and heavy shrapnel, banging in six goals in quick succession; the beat-down was in full flow. A couple more goals from strike sensation, Will Margot, got the score to a healthy 8-1 at half-time. The A team once again rotated players into interesting positions for the second half and their defence was soon unpicked by the Muskateer combo of Groves & Winchester. The A team also tried a new defensive strategy whilst defending short-corners....all four defenders running behind the goal to leave just the goalkeeper to face the incoming shot from Iain Wrigley.....which he put wide!!! The C team managed to knock in a further couple of goals to finish up winning the second half 5-2.....this was aided by the A team having three players sent off within two minutes at the hands of umpires Flint & Hull. Luckiest punter on the night had to be Sarah Pressley who managed to win ?27 from a ?1 bet with the unluckiest being Graham Shimmin who as usual managed to back all the donkeys! Watt Bundles In The Winner.... Sun 23rd Feb 2008. By Webmaster. Nick Watt was the hero for Jonah Hull's men on Saturday as he bravely snatched the winner in a close fought game against Harlequins A. The game started well for Valkyrs and with his first game in four weeks skipper Hull latched on to a through ball from Vic Ferns and managed to find a great angle to beat the keeper at the far post. Harlequins came back strongly and Mikey Lee was made to make some great saves to keep the lads ahead but eventually the pressure told and the Harlequins were soon back on level terms. Steve Lowe and Sam Quinn played well as did the goal hero Nick Watt who continues to improve with every game. At the back Dave Griffiths was his usual rock like self and up front Clive Callister worked hard for the side all day. Whilst not playing their best hockey, this was an important win which keeps the lads at the top of the second division. Sun 17th Feb 2008. By Webmaster. The Mens B team eventually beat the C team 4-2 in a very closely contested derby match on Saturday. With several players missing, the B team were put under pressure from the start by a sharp C team led by skipper Tim Groves. With 15 minutes gone the B team had hardly had an attack when Mark Perryman finished a slick short corner move to edge ahead. The scores were soon level with a Neil Shimmin strike but by half time the B team were back on top via a Vic Ferns effort. In the second half the B team played much better with Chris Killey in particular and Nick Watt having very good games. Up fron Clive Callister led the line well all day and battled against the tough tackling Bill Cowie. However, mid way through the half the B team went further ahead thanks to strikes from Perryman and Ferns and it was left to Skipper Groves to bag a consolation for the C team in the last minute. Meanwhile, the Ladies A came away with a very good draw against a strong Ramsey side thanks to an Andrea Kneen effort. The girls were under pressure from the start and spent long periods defending their D but in doing so Lisa Watson, Helen Bates and Jenny Walmsley were outstanding. Amy Speed didn't see too much of the ball but used it well down the right flank as did Poppy Walker who battled hard all day in midfield. The girls conceded an equaliser early in the second half but Ashley Hall created some good opportunities for herself which she was unlucky not to score from. This was another good performance against difficult opposition and game by game the girls are improving and showing to be more than a match for any team in the league. Sun 10th Feb 2008. By Webmaster. The Mens A were missing at least five regular players this weekend as they took on a potentially dangerous Ramsey A. Ramsey started the game well and had all the play for the first ten minutes but the men got into their stride and were soon one up. Neil Jacobs & Chris Thomas worked hard together all day linking play well with Thomas managing to bag a brace. Charlie Griffiths had another fine game in defence and is improving with every game that he plays at this level and Jules Colley was as dependable as ever. Although not the best performance of the season so far, with so many players away a 4-2 scoreline was in the end not too bad at all. By Webmaster. The Ladies A suffered last minute agony against Bacchas A on Saturday in what had to be the worst weather of the season so far. The girls dominated the first half with Andrea Kneen and Ali Carroon having shots saved however they conceded to a late short corner depsite the best efforts of Sarah Presley. After a positive half time talk from the skipper and coach, the girls started the second half strongly; determined to find an equaliser. After some great approach play they found themselves back in opposition D and won a short corner. With text book precision Leanne Brew took the straight strike, Ali Carroon making it to the near post in time to deflect the ball across the front of goal where Kate Stockman skilfully slotted the ball home. Bernie Dunn, clearly frustrated at not being able to be on the pitch gave great encouragement to the squad, and when Bacchas were on the attack it wasn't long before a blue was shutting them down. Unfortunately for her, Ali Carroon received a stray stick to her mouth and was forced to leave the pitch with 3 broken teeth but still the girls battled hard. However with only two minutes left Bacchas scored a very scrappy goal to end up winning 2-1. Lady of the Match was awarded to Kate Stockman who had a great game, but all the players would like to send their best wishes to Ali - Get well soon!!! By Webmaster. The Mens C team put on an impressive display to beat the Roosters 3-1. They came out of the blocks quickly and were soon up a goal courtesy of Bill Cowie and should have been even further in front with a little more composure in front of goal. At the back Simon Kelly marshalled the defence well with Andy Kneale and Darren Quirk having a great game in goal with a couple of fantastic saves. Neil Shimmin provided the energy in midfield and further goals soon followed with Captain Groves and Mike Flowers on target. Special mention for Rob Condra who made his senior debut for the Club and played very well in defence. The Ladies B took on Castletown A and put the pressure on them from the first whistle. After a brilliant first half hour, Valkyrs were unlucky for the ball to be deflected into the back of the net. With lots of players off island this weekend, Anya Jackson had her call up to the first division and did not disappoint, making some excellent tackles and playing a very mature game. Naomi Lewis was also magnificent in defence, working tirelessly and frustrating the Castletown winger. Valkyrs came under more pressure in the second half, with Christian Corlett making some fine saves yet again but in the end the strength of the Castletown girls showed and they eventually ran out 4-0 winners. After a slow start the Mens A kicked into gear and began to dominate a young Bacchas B side far easier than the local press would have suggested?! The goals started to come after some slick hockey and by half time the score was 4-0. The second half brought another 5 goals, with some exquisite passing and movement opening the flood gates. Even Chris (YMCA) Caldwell managed to score! There were some notable performances from Rob Mylchreest who ran the right flank, and Russ Miller who linked well with Jules Colley providing many a decent pass. Short corners looked slick which would even give the impression that they practice them?! Goals scored by Greg Miller (3) Russ Miller (2) Chris (YMCA) Caldwell (2) Neill Jacobs and Gareth Morris. The Ladies A team were extremely unlucky to lose 2-1 to Phoenix, captain Brewer would?ve even been disappointed with a draw let alone a loss! The side played extremely well, the passing and movement still continues to improve and this helped them dominate the game. With the score still somehow 0-0 with 10 minutes to go Phoenix managed to make the most of their two attacks in the second half to put away two goals! Valkyrs continued to battle on, very frustrated to be in control of the game but losing and with time running out Ali Carroon eventually found the net during a short corner routine. Without a doubt the score could have been very different with a few more minutes to play! Everyone had a good game however mentions must be made of Amy Speed who was voted as woman of the match. Her amazing pace and skill down the right wing kept the Phoenix defence on their toes. Ali Carroon for her goal and efforts in midfield. She had a tough job keeping their skilful midfielders at bay and did a fantastic job throughout the whole match. Shooting practice is a must so see you all at training in preparation for the game next weekend! By Webmaster. The ladies teams faired somewhat better this week with a couple of good victories. The A team were visited by Harlequins and despite only recording a 2-0 victory, they had most of the play and could have bagged several more. The ladies running the show for Brewers team were Ali Carroon, man of the match, ably supported by Delta Williams and Amy Speed. The ladies C were the other side taking a victory back to the westside with a 2-0 defeat over Vikings B. Aalish Burden stole top marks with both goals. The Ladies B team put in another spirited performance against Ramsey A and eventually lost 6-1. After a strong start, Valkyrs found themselves 2 goals down after 20 minutes. However, they responded well with a great attacking move which saw Kate Reynolds crossing in a fantastic ball which Ashley Hall got on the end of with a great reverse flick. Christian Corlett, on her debut for the B Team, pulled off some great saves. Also on her debut for the team this season, Ann Parry worked tirelessly in mid-field against some strong opposition. In the second half, Ramsey scored a couple of goals in quick succession but Valkyrs continued to work hard and had some great attacking play. They could have had another goal when Naomi Young found herself one-on-one but was denied by some excellent goalkeeping. Man of the Match went to our new recruit, Helen Bates, who had an outstanding game in defence, winning many tackles and playing some excellent hockey, well done. Greg Miller prepared his troops for a tough battle against Vikings A and after 2 minutes, found themselves 1-0 down. Up stepped Chris Caldwell who converted a slick move to level the scores. Valkyrs never looked back with the remaining goals being dispatched by Neill Jacobs, Rob Mylchreest, Chris 'the thunderbolt' Thomas (2) and a further strike from Chris 'the don' Caldwell. Strangely enough, Gunshows Miller Vanilla & G 'showing symptoms' Morris stuck to providing the goals this week after both failing to find the net. The B team put Ramsey B to the sword with a comprehensive 5-0 win at RGS. After a quiet 20 minutes, Valkyrs opened the scoring with a Mark Perryman mach 3 from a short corner. Clive Callister stepped up with the second and Charlie Griffiths made it three not long after. Captain Hull converted two short corners to round off proceedings. Young Killey brother, Craig & Chris had excellent games along with Steven Lowe. The C team completed the mens rout with another 5-0 win over Vikings C. Muskateers Groves & Winchester grabbed one each as did Neil Shimmin, Nick Watt and Mike Flowers. By Webmaster. Jonah Hull's Mens B got off to a flying start by beating Castletown B 5-1 on the opening day of the Mens season. With a new look side that had a blend of youth and experience they were soon 3-0 up after twenty minutes playing some sexy hockey. The skipper himself managed to bag a brace and there were also goals for ex-muskateer Graham Shimmin and Mark Perryman. Vic Ferns also managed to get in on the act by calmly tucking away a penalty flick into the bottom corner giving the keeper no chance of saving it. Mark Osborn had a great game in midfield as did Dave Hall who played like a man liberated after his mixed experience this year. The ladies teams all had difficult encounters to start the season with and found it tough going. The A team went the closest to getting a result but were out-muscled by a strong Vikings A team 3-1. The B team had a daunting task of taking on Bacchas A and soon found themselves struggling and came out of the game on the wrong side of 15-1 scoreline. New signing, Kate Stockman and the ladies goalmachine, Ashley Hall both battled well against stronger opposition. The C team were at CRHS to face a decent Castletown C side. With a few players unavailable, the girls had it tough and the game finished up 6-0 to the Southsiders. A new look Valkyrs A mens side took to the pitch with only a win in mind. The game started off in typical fashion with early pressure on the Saracens goal. The breakthrough happened after eight mins with a one-two move between Miller G and Morris G with Miller finding the back of the net. Goals then followed from Morris, Miller R and Neil Jacobs bringing the scoreline to 4-0 at the break. The second half was much the same with six more goals coming. There were some notable performances from young gun Chaz Griffiths (Le Rock) and hard work from Rob Mylchreest (Roddy). The final score ended up a deserving 10-0. Any names missing off the score sheet Mr Caldwell?!?!?! He did work very hard though! By Lisa Watson. Valkyrs proved their indoor excellence this week, winning all three, mens, ladies and mixed titles for the second year running. All three finals were Valkyrs versus Vikings battles, where the almighty blues thwarted a persistent opponent. The first match of the evening was to be won by our girls, who valiantly battled to the very final whistle. After being down 2-0 and bringing the score back to 2-2 at full time, the match was to be decided on penalty flicks. This is where Andrea the great excelled, being the only girl of the three to take a shot, who put it in the back of the net. The pressure, it seemed, got to our Jelly Girls (Kirsty and Lisa) neither one scoring. The same could not be said for our very own hero Prez who made three excellent saves to keep the Vikings ruffians away from our title! Our boys in blue were up next and had a tough act to follow after the previous excitement. The match was close throughout with both teams taking the lead at one point or another. However, the superiority of the Valkyrs warriors became evident when they took the lead with a two goal cushion. The lads showed true unity with some impressive passing and simply sexy scoring. Will the Wonderer put in a brilliant performance and blocked the Vikings attempts on goal. For the second time in the evening, the West Side prevailed with a 7?5 win over the hooligans from the East Side. Weary from the previous matches, the men and women teamed up for the battle in the mixed final. This proved to be a tough game with a tight scoreline. After being subjugated twice, the demoralised Vikings put up quite a battle. With literally moments to spare, Vikings managed to get a goal bringing the score to 5-5 at full time, forcing another penalty shoot out. Once again, Will made some excellent saves allowing none of the opposition to take advantage of this opportunity. In a surprising turn of events, the winning penalty was not scored by either of our wonder boys Gareth or Greg. Evidently on a mission to redeem her previous failure, Lisa put a stunning ball past the opposing keeper sealing the Valkyrs hat-trick. Well done to all who took part in the indoor leagues and a big thank you to the captains who organised the teams. Special thanks also to Jonah and Enty for giving up their free time to come and umpire, it has been greatly appreciated. Hopefully going forward we'll be able to get more members involved with the indoor league to build on our current dominance. Mhelliah Raises A Record Amount Again Sun 11th Nov 2007. By Webmaster.
